Reading

I have been MIA. (For those of you old enough I will give 10 points to the person who can tell me what what MIA stands for in church speak.)

I have had very good reasons to have abandoned my blogging, however - but it is all Jen's fault. You see, she had checked out Twilight from the library and had until 6/28 to return it and she read it very quickly and offered it to me to read before she had to get it back to the library.

Everyone I talk to RAVES about this book and as I am a copy cat I, of course, had to read it too.

Before 6/28.

The problem it created was that I already had a huge reading assignment. As Jen is a Harry Potter FREAK she has organized a book club get together on 7/12 to discuss book 6 before we wait in line at Barnes and Nobel at midnight on the 21st to get Book 7. I have admitted in an earlier post that I am episode purist so you will understand why I had to ready Book 5 before I read Book 6.

In case you were wondering that is 2,086 pages in all that I will need to have read before 7/12. (7/12 is the day I am seeing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as well as the day of Jen's party to discuss Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince).

I would like to wax dramatic and whine that Jen is 'making-me' read Harry Potter so quickly but secretly I am as big of a freak as Jen is when it comes to Harry Potter so I am kind of glad I have an excuse to completely submerge myself into all things Harry Potter again. It has been so fun to explore this amazing world that J.K. Rowling has created and I for one have really enjoyed the movies. I felt like they were as true to the books as you could get trying to tell the story of one year at Hogwarts in a couple of hours. I know that I am going to be sad when I read the last page of book 7. In theory I would like to take my time reading this last book but I know that I will devour it like I did the previous 6.

I have also enjoyed watching how much my Nephew has also enjoyed these books. He was about the same age as Harry at his first year at Hogwarts when he began reading the series. He even looks like what I pictured Harry to be before Daniel Radcliffe was cast - although I think that KJ still makes a better Harry. KJ is now 16 and very cool and says that there are books that he enjoys more than Harry Potter but I know that deep down he will always have that bond to Harry as the rest of us have.

And for all of you who think the Harry Potter books are silly and stupid, well, you are a bunch of Muggles!!!

I am a Muggle. Guilty as charged. I drank the Kool Aid for the first few books and really did enjoy them but then came book 5 and J.K. lost me. I still read it and even read book 6 to see if it was a fluke. No. It got even worse. I am actually thinking about not reading book 7. Yes it is heresy in my family of HP lovers. But really there are just so many problems in the stories I just couldn't 'explain them away' any longer. So, I will be celebrating with everyone else but my celebration will be that it is finally over and the Harry and Voldemort will be dead.

What page are you on? I sure hope you'll be done with book 6 and ready to discuss on Thursday! I'll be there with treats and prizes, wearing my new Harry t-shirt!

PS...Is Kevin really your brother? Tell him I want to have a debate (or ALL OUT WAR) to discuss all the "problems" in the HP series. I hope no one goes to his "finally over" Harry celebration.

I saw your comments on Kristi's blog and dropped by to check your blog out. I was thrilled to read the first post and find out you are a Harry Potter lover. There is so much potter goodness going on these couple of months (movie & book) that I am beside myself - I love it!

My daughter and I hit the midnight movie last night and we are deep in creating a Hogwarts celebration for the book release. I understand your feelings about reading book 7 - how sad I will be to see it all come to an end.

Hope you got all caught up on your reading!

Actually I imagined MYSELF as a model of what Harry Potter would look like at 40...

I'l attend Kevin's anti-HP celebration. JK is another angry female who got everyone's attention with some truly magical storytelling and once we got "hooked" slammed us all with her black hearted vitriol, bereft of soul and any shread of intellect.

Everyone will die in book 7 and JK will stand on her billions, laughing hysterically with blood on her hands as millions weep for more of her trash.

Geesh you two - where is all of this bitterness towards Harry coming from? If Harry is anything like you, Mike, when he passes 40 then I hope JK does kill him at the end of book 7.
I think I am going to work on a new screenplay for the 3rd Grumpy Old Men movie staring the two of you.
P.S. I'll see you at the movie tomorrow where we will be watching the 5th Harry Potter movie on the big screen - didn't you pay money to see this...?
I'm just sayin'.....

See... You've read so much of this stuff you're channeling J.K. now!

Yikes.

I'm rolling right now! Can't wait to see you tonight...only Harry Potter lovers allowed!

Well how was it!?!

Were there any controversies? Did the Ron lovers lock horns with the Harry Zealots? Did anyone show up as an obscenely wealthy shrew?? Was anyone flogged for their alternate point of view??? Any fan fiction come out of this? Maybe Harry and Cho are married by a Centaur then find the Chamber of Homeymoon Suites and stay up all night eating cookie dough while watching the Tri-Wizard Cheerleading Competion that Cho was in several years ago but lost to the Compton Clovers... yada yada yada...

I loved the book Twilight and read New Moon as well. I can't wait for the third book to come out this fall. Yeah!

Mike, I think they are ignoring us now.

BTW, do I get a prize for the answer to MIA?

Mike said...

It means we won.

Your prize is knowing you're right and they are wrong.

Peace Out.
